Five Tips for Creating Habits that Last
I love the freshness of a new year and the idea of creating goals versus resolutions. There is something more permanent about a goal or a new habit, and while there is no need for a new year (or month or week!) to create something, it feels good to start in January.
This year we are focusing on financial goals and creating lasting habits around the way we live – simply, intentionally, with a focus on learning and growth. Last year I solidified my habit of reading nightly before bed, and I shared my current reading list for 2020 here. I’m looking forward to a year focused on daily health habits and finding the joy in simplicity.
TIPS FOR CREATING LASTING HABITS
1. Focus on ADDING things into your routine versus taking things away.
Ex: Drink my body weight in water each day versus stop drinking soda. Add veggies to each meal versus stop eating xyz.
2. WRITE them down where you can see them each day!
I love to start my day reviewing my goals, my reason for pursuing them, and visualize what reaching them will look like. Do not underestimate the power of visualization!! Create an image in your mind of what achieving your goal will look like – in vivid detail. What are you wearing? What do you feel? Who is with you? Where are you at?
I love to pair visualization with an essential oil blend like Highest Potential, Magnify Your Purpose or another oil that speaks to my goals + emotional state.
3. Have a strong WHY.
Why do you want to run that 5K or change your eating habits or start that business or insert whatever goal here? If we can nail down the true reasons WHY we’re pursuing something then the how naturally follows. If the ‘why’ is strong enough you will be able to figure out the how, so start there!
4. Adopt the motto ‘ALL OR SOMETHING’ as my friend Katie says.
There are days where I schedule in a 30 minute workout, then life happens and I only get 15 minutes right then. I shifted my mentality to be proud of myself for those 15 minutes and determined to get in another 15 in some other way – dance party with my kids, family walk, etc. Do something every day to move you forward, even if it is the tiniest step!
5. SHARE your goals and your why!
Invite your partner, spouse, close friend or even your Instagram community into your journey! There is so much more that connects us than separates us, and we are all yearning for connection! Share your goals and your reasons for them with someone you love and trust. This will also create accountability for you and give you someone who can help motivate you on the hardest days!
I’d love to hear some of your goals for the year below!!
