Festive + Healthy Halloween Foods Your Kids Will Love!
Is there anything better than your kids getting super excited over something small? Well maybe if it is something small and also healthy! Our oldest loves anything and everything festive, whether it’s fall pumpkins or twinkle lights or green garlands for St. Patrick’s day, so when I made him a festive Halloween fruit + veggie tray he was over the moon excited. Bonus points that everything on there was healthy, allergy-friendly and could even be Whole30 approved! Here are a few ideas for making your meals and snacks festive!
FESTIVE FRUIT + VEGGIE TRAY
Grab your favorite raw fruits + veggies, ranch dip and/or nut butter for dipping, some granola (we love this one and this grain-free one!), an assortment of almonds, cashews, pistachios, dried fruit or any other favorite finger snacks and serve them in fruit/veggie jack ‘o lanterns, glass beakers, graduated cylinders (perfect for dipping veggies!) and/or test tubes!
Boo-nana Sticks:
These are a simple favorite that would also be great for smaller children, just remove the raisins! If you don’t have dairy allergies, you can use full-fat yogurt!
Prep work: refrigerate a can of coconut milk overnight.
When ready to make, remove the coconut milk from fridge and shake well to mix. Cut a banana in half, then cut in half again to make ghost-shaped pieces with a flat back. Insert a popsicle stick into the banana, then dip into coconut milk. Add raisins for eyes + a mouth, then freeze on a baking sheet for 20 minutes or so. Remove and enjoy! Note: these do melt, so if you are taking them to a party, pop them back in the freezer for a bit before serving!
Monster apples (two ways):
This is an incredibly simple way to add some fun to a lunchbox, play date or Halloween party! Grab your favorite apples, cut out a large wedge, then follow the directions below!
Option 1: Fill the opening of the whole apple with false vampire teeth and add stick on eyes (or cut out holes and use raisins).
Option 2: To the opening of the whole apple, add a light layer of almond/peanut butter and slivered almonds or sunflower seeds for teeth, a strawberry triangle for a mouth, and stick on eyes (or cut out holes and use raisins).
Grapefruit jack ‘o lantern fruit salad:
Whenever my kids are tired of the fruit we have on hand, we mix it all together and it becomes something new! Add in some mixed nuts, a festive bowl and you’ve made it even more special.
How to: Simply cut the end off of a grapefruit and use a pointed spoon to scoop out the fruit. Use a small sharp knife to cut in a jack o lantern face and fill with your favorite fruits or a fruit and nut mix!
Mandarin Pumpkins (two ways)
Two of the simplest but festive ways to serve mandarin oranges!
Option 1: Peel mandarin oranges and add celery slices, spinach stems or bell pepper slices as stalks to create pumpkins!
Option 2: Heading to a party or event and don’t want to peel the oranges? Grab a sharpie and draw on your best jack ‘o lantern faces!
Jack ‘o Lantern Veggies + Dip
Simply slice up your favorite raw vegetables (carrots, celery, bell pepper, even broccoli!), and place it in a bell pepper cut to look like a jack ‘o lantern. Serve with a test tube of Tessemae’s ranch or Whole30 dump ranch!
Frankenstein’s Elixir:
Write possibly the simplest way to make a smoothie festive! Just whip up your favorite green smoothie, then place in a clear, plain glass and draw on your best jack ‘o lantern or Frankenstein face and hair with sharpie! Serve with a festive straw (glass or biodegradable/compostable)!
The sharpie will come off with alcohol or our favorite plant-based cleaner and lemon essential oil!
